PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners in the insurance organisations, risk managers and managers on mines.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the legislation regulating Health and Safety in a mining environment.
  • Explaining the collective bargaining process required by the Act.
  • Describing how the Act is applied to different mining operations.
  • Applying the risk management process as required by the Act.
  • Explaining the regulations relating to mining closure.

    1. The purpose of the Act is explained with reference to the need to regulate the mining industry.

    2. The role of the regulations in supporting the Act is explained and an indication is given of the different topics covered in the regulations.

    3. The SABS codes and other legislation that apply to mining are named and an indication is given of the locations or areas of operation in the mines where each is applicable.

    4. The role of the inspector of mines is explained with reference to the duties and powers of inspectors.

    Explain the collective bargaining process required by the Act.

    1. The requirements of the Act are analysed and a policy is developed to manage mine closure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. A plan to rehabilitate surface and workings areas is compiled that covers safety, health, environs and the surroundings of the mine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. On-going support functions after closure are named and an indication is given of the consequences if these are not in place and monitored regularly. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be obtained from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body, through summative and formative assessment by a registered assessor.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the INSQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the INSQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with INSQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Agreement with INSQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
