PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is designed to empower learners to implement a strategy for personal development. It will equip learners with knowledge and skills that will help them to manage the demands of daily living and to be emotionally literate and have emotional insight.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge and insight into the role of emotions in behaviour.
  • Applying knowledge of brain structures to explain responses to emotions.
  • Demonstrating skills and techniques for responding to situations in an emotionally and/or spiritually intelligent manner.
  • Applying knowledge of Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence to own life situations.

    The typical scope of this unit standard is:
  • Self-awareness and the evaluation of own behaviour in authentic situations including examination of self in socio-structural, political, cultural and economic environments.
  • Praxis or reflection-in-action as a means of achieving self-awareness.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge and insight into the role of emotion in behaviour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The concepts of emotions, moods, temperament and emotional disorders are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Emotions are categorised into clusters and an indication is given of the non verbal signals that can reveal the presence of emotion. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Two models of the emotional and spiritual mind are compared in terms of how each explains how people respond emotionally to different situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The roles of the emotional mind and the rational mind are explained with reference to perception and reflective thought. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply knowledge of the central nervous system to explain responses to emotions.

    1. The role of fear is explained with reference to basic survival and application in a current situation.

    2. The role of the central nervous system as a central alarm system is explained with reference to receiving information and the body's emotional response system.

    3. Physiological responses to emotions are analysed for five different emotions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Two theories of different types of intelligence are explored with reference to their usefulness in assisting people to manage stress in an emotionally and/or spiritually intelligent way. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stress may be due to social and/or personal change that includes, but is not limited to, change in marital status, parenthood, retrenchment, disablement and terminal or chronic illness.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Emotional skills for coping with authentic life situations are demonstrated for three different scenarios. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Cognitive skills for coping with authentic life situations are demonstrated for three different scenarios. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Behavioural skills for coping with authentic life situations are demonstrated for three different scenarios. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Skills for coping with authentic life situations in a spiritually intelligent manner are demonstrated for three different scenarios. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply knowledge of Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence to own life situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Own responses in three different situations are analysed in terms of related emotions, physiological changes and accompanying behaviour and an indication is given of the consequences of inappropriate or irrational responses in each situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence theory is applied to interpersonal and intrapersonal responses in three situations and an indication is given of the impact of changes in own behaviour on the dynamics of each situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The impact of changes in own behaviour on family, work and social relationships is observed over a period of a month in order to set goals for further personal development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The implications and consequences of applying theory of Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence in practice are explained with reference to motivation, conflict management and creating a positive home and work environment. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the appropriate ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • The mechanisms and requirements for moderation should be applied as per the ETQA`s criteria.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
