PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for persons who intend following a career in the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the domain of cement, lime aggregates and sand.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Plan and prepare for blast area survey.
  • Operate the surveying equipment to conduct face profiling and drill hole surveying.
  • Produce survey results and make inputs to the rockbreaking processes.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of conducting face profiling and drill hole surveys in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    The data relevant to the area to be surveyed is acquired and evaluated in accordance with specified requirements.

    The survey pegs/marks and datums are checked for correct position in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The survey equipment is checked for serviceability in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Potential hazards and risks are anticipated and eliminated or mitigated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Operate the survey equipment to conduct face profiling and drill hole surveying.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The face profiling equipment is set up and operated as per manufacturers instructions and site requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The boretrack equipment is assembled and operated as per manufacturers instructions and site requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment faults are diagnosed and rectified or reported to appropriate personnel in accordance with specified requirements.

    Routine servicing and housekeeping is carried out to manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Survey operations are conducted in accordance with site specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.

    Produce survey results and make inputs to the rockbreaking processes.

    Plans and sections are produced of the area subject to face profiling and interpretations made in accordance with blast designs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Borehole tracking results are plotted and compared to planned drill positions, depths and divergence in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Recommendations are made to the rockbreaking operations personnel in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Records are produced and maintained in accordance with specified requirements.
