This unit standard will be useful for persons who intend following a career in the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the domain of cement, lime, aggregates and sand.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Customer requirements are studied in order to determine appropriate activities in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective Equipment is selected, checked and worn and the lock-out procedure is applied in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A pre-use inspection is conducted and anomalies rectified or reported in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Operator maintenance is conducted in accordance with specified requirements and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Hazards are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements and consequences of inadequate preparation are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Explosives are loaded in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Explosives must include:
  • Base emulsions.
  • Gassing agents.
  • Ammonium nitrate.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Place explosives into blastholes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The vehicle is driven to the site in accordance with specified requirements and the local quarry personnel are consulted in order to determine site specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A workplace inspection is conducted in order to ensure that the mixer-placer truck can be operated safely and the machine is operated in accordance with specified requirements and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Explosives are mixed and placed into blastholes in accordance with quarry personnel instructions, blast design layout and specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The explosives truck and environmental conditions are monitored in accordance with good practice and specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Monitoring must include:
  • Instrumentation.
  • Consumables usage.

    Environmental conditions must include:
  • Spillages.
  • Dust.
  • Water.
  • Noise.
  • Illumination.
  • Weather (lightning).
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The work area is monitored and anomalies and non conformances rectified or reported and operator maintenance is conducted in accordance with specified requirements and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements and the consequences of inadequate operation are explained in terms of productivity and specified requirements.

    Finalise operating a mixer-placer explosives truck.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The mixing/placing system and the truck are shut down in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The truck and accessories are inspected and anomalies repaired or reported. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Operator maintenance is conducted in accordance with specified requirements and manufacturer's pecifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Unused explosives material is dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reports are prepared and submitted in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Anomalies and non conformances are reported, consequences of inadequate finalisation are explained and hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.
