In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to evaluate the impact of variations in glass raw materials, changes in melting and conditioning conditions on the forming properties of glass.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Evaluate the impact of raw material variations on the glass forming process.
  • Evaluate the impact of variations in the melting operation on the glass forming process.
  • Gather information about the condition of molten glass.
  • Describe the operation of the forehearth.
  • Evaluate the impact of variations in the conditioning process on the glass forming process.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Operating equipment in a glass forming process.
  • Operating and controlling a glass forming process.
  • Reading and interpreting instruments and displays in the glass forming process.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The typical context of this unit standard includes any glass forming environment.

The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process requires a wide range of technical skills and offers a considerable choice of procedures. A broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts, analytical interpretation of information, informed judgement and a range of sometime innovative responses to concrete but often unfamiliar problems are employed. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in advanced trade and technical occupations.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Evaluate the impact of raw material variations on the glass forming process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Glass raw material characteristics are described relative to glass forming practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The impact of raw materials variations on glass properties and the forming process is described with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Glass forming settings are adjusted to compensate for raw material variations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Evaluate the impact of variations in the melting operation on the glass forming process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Molten glass characteristics are described relative to glass forming practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The impact of molten glass variations on glass properties and the forming process is described in accordance with requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Glass variation range include:
  • Load.
  • Colour (where applicable).
  • Glass type (where applicable).

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Glass forming settings are adjusted to compensate for variations in the melting operation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Evaluate the impact of variations in the conditioning process on the glass forming process.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Equipment include the forehearth or canal, combustion system, level control equipment, temperature and pressure measurement equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Different parts of the forehearth or canal are identified and explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Operation of the forehearth or canal and its components are described with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Process control systems and control parameters of the forehearth or canal and its components are described with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The impact of process variations on molten glass and forming is assessed in accordance with procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Glass forming settings are adjusted to compensate for variations in the conditioning operation.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the Unit Standard.
