PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand and apply the philosophies underpinning the carriage of dangerous goods by air and identity and apply limitations associated with the carriage of dangerous goods. They will also be able to classify dangerous goods and compile and verity relevant documentation in line with organisational and legislative requirements.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Interpreting and applying the philosophy underpinning the carriage of dangerous goods by air.
  • Identifying and applying the limitations associated with the carriage of dangerous goods by air.
  • Verifying the classification of dangerous goods when accepting and processing dangerous goods for transportation by air.
  • Compiling and verifying documentation. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

  • Dangerous Goods terminology includes but is not limited to: Classification, Packaging, Documentation, and Labelling.
  • Hidden dangerous goods include but are not limited to: household goods, consolidations, camping equipment, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

    This unit standard requires the individual to undertake the relevant outcomes actions for the nine identified classes of Dangerous Goods as listed below:
  • Class 1 - explosives.
  • Class 2 - gasses.
  • Class 3 - flammable liquids.
  • Class 4 - flammable solids.
  • Class 5 - oxidizers & peroxides.
  • Class 6 - poisons & infectious substances.
  • Class 7 - radioactive materials.
  • Class 8 - corrosives.
  • Class 9 - miscellaneous dangerous goods/substances.

    The term Dangerous Goods is defined as it relates to the transportations of dangerous goods by air. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The history and origin of Dangerous Goods Regulations is described as it relates to the transportation of dangerous goods by air. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of continuous training and assessment in the area of Dangerous Goods is explained in accordance to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reporting accidents and incidents involving dangerous goods is explained in accordance with its importance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The parties to which Dangerous Goods Regulations apply are identified as it relates to the transportation of dangerous goods by air. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The shipper's roles and responsibilities are identified and explained in line with organisational and legislative regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The operator's roles and responsibilities are identified and explained in line with organisational standards and practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Dangerous Goods forbidden (including the incompatibility of dangerous goods) in aircraft under any circumstances are identified and described according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Dangerous Goods Forbidden unless exempted are identified and described according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hidden dangerous goods are identified and listed according to the International Cival Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Dangerous goods carried by passengers and crew are identified and described according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Dangerous goods that are the property of the operator are identified according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Dangerous goods that can be carried in accepted quantities are identified and described according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Dangerous goods accepted in limited quantities are identified and described according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations.

    UN or ID number is identified and cross-referenced to numerical cross-reference list of dangerous goods according to the International Cival Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Proper shipping name, class, division and sub-risks is identified and listed according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Packing group and limitations on passenger and cargo aircraft are identified and explained and include limited quantities according to the International Cival Aviation Organisation regulations.

    Special provisions and emergency response codes are explained according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations.
