PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to pack, stow and segregate dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes in accordance with the UN classification system.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Explaining and applying packaging and labelling requirements in terms of International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG) requirements.
  • Stowing dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes.
  • Segregating dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes.
  • Verifying transport documentation for dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    This unit standard is intended for learners who are handling dangerous goods in conformity with International Legislation.

    This unit standard requires the individual to undertake the relevant outcomes actions for the nine identified classes of Dangerous Goods as listed below:
  • Class 1 - explosives.
  • Class 2 - gasses.
  • Class 3 - flammable liquids.
  • Class 4 - flammable solids.
  • Class 5 - oxidizers & peroxides.
  • Class 6 - poisons & infectious substances.
  • Class 7 - radioactive materials.
  • Class 8 - corrosives.
  • Class 9 - miscellaneous dangerous goods/substances.

    The classes, divisions, packing groups, UN numbers, proper shipping names are explained and described as they relate to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Physical properties of different types, description of different types, limited quantities.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The marking, labelling and placarding of cargo transport units and packages are explained and described as they relate to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    The concept of limited quantities and general requirements for packaging of dangerous goods are explained and described as per the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code.

    The selection of suitable stowage instructions is according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    The principles of stowage (according to the different classes) are explained, described and applied as it relates to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stowage provisions are explained, described and applied as it relates to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consignment procedures are explained and described as it relates to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    The safe stowage procedures of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes are explained, described and applied as per the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    The segregation between bulk materials possessing chemical hazards and dangerous goods in packaged form is explained and described according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code.

    Restriction of stowage of incompatible goods are explained, described and applied according to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Requirements of vessel certificate of compliance for carriage of dangerous goods with regards to segregation are identified, interpreted and adhered to according to vessel specifications.
