PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for learners who operate or intend to operate a batch tinting process in the surface coatings or related chemical industry to produce pigmented surface coatings complying with specified requirements.

A learner credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of basic colour science.
  • Prepare equipment and self for the tinting process.
  • Tint and match pigmented surface coatings, both metallic and non-metallic/perlescent.
  • Conduct tinting support activities.

This standard is primarily intended for those who are directly involved in the actual tinting of product to match required colour standards, but it is also useful for those who oversee a batch tinting process or need to have a clearer understanding of how colours are produced.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Pigmented surface coatings include solid, translucent, metallic and perlescent colours.
  • Tint/tinting means the procedure whereby previously dispersed pigment colourants or toners are added to a tint base, mixed in until homogeneous and then compared for colour with a reference/standard colour sample to assess if it matches. The procedure is normally repeated until a match within specified/acceptable limits is achieved.
  • Tint base means a previously mixed and/or dispersed intermediate coatings product which is not a finished product in itself and requires the addition of colourant(s)/toner(s) to complete the product. A tint base may be pigmented or non-pigmented/clear.
  • Colourant/tinter/ toner means an intermediate product consisting of a primary pigment previously dispersed in a liquid medium.
    > Range: Solid colour/opaque and/or translucent.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) means equipment required to protect the health and safety of persons, such as gloves, masks, respirators, aprons, overcoats, safety shoes, ear protection, eye protection.
  • Relevant legislation means legislation pertaining to the chemical manufacturing environment. Includes, but is not limited to acts and regulations that control occupational health and safety, water and the environment.
  • Standard operating procedures (SOPs) means procedures described in controlled documentation and/or other standard site-specific procedures pertaining to the process and/or equipment being used.
  • Instructions include any works instructions, batch card or process instructions in written format and/or verbal instructions issued by a superior.
  • Good manufacturing practice means that part of Quality Assurance that ensures that a product is manufactured consistently and controlled to quality standards appropriate to its intended use.
  • Materials handled may be hazardous and/or non-hazardous.
