PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard intended for learners who deal with transportation insurance which is a specialised class of business in Short Term Insurance. It will be useful for learners in retail insurance including freight forwarding.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Researching the influence of history and traditions on international law in the 21st Century.
  • Explaining the English Marine Act of 1906 and its impact on international insurance.
  • Explaining the influence of the American Law on air transport.
  • Analysing the application of international conventions on the movement of goods around the world.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The beginnings of the insurance industry are investigated with reference to the establishment of Lloyds in 1706. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The influence of historical marine insurance on current practices in short term insurance is outlined with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the English Marine Act of 1906 and its impact on international insurance.

    The role of the English Marine Act of 1906 in formalising international trade is explained with reference to the British Empire. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The influence of the Act on United Nations marine laws is outlined with reference to the movement of goods internationally. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons why English Law was eventually assimilated into United Nations conventions are debated with reference to international power relationships and transportation insurance.

    Explain the influence of American Law on air transport.

    The origins of the American Legislation are investigated with reference to why limitations were imposed on air transport.

    The influence of the American Legislation on United Nations air transportation laws is outlined with reference to the movement of goods internationally.

    Reasons why American Law was eventually assimilated into United Nations conventions are debated with reference to international power relationships and air transportation insurance.

    Analyse the application of international conventions in the movement of goods around the world.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The impact of customs and tax laws on the movement of goods internationally is explained with reference to movement between nation states and regional trade groupings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) agreements within the Southern African region is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The transportation cycle in the movement of goods between countries is explained for examples with and without trade agreements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not abiding by international conventions are explained with reference to safety and insurance.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
