PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons working in the International trade environment especially within exports. The learner is able to prepare and secure freight for transportation.

This unit standard is intended for learners who will demonstrate:
  • An ability to acquire a wide range of technical skills.
  • An ability to discuss a considerable choice of procedures.
  • A broad knowledge that incorporates theoretical concepts.
  • An ability to critically analyse information.
  • An ability to make judgements to unknown problems.
  • An ability to work on its own with complete responsibility.

    A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Develop freight packing, marking and labelling instructions.
  • Ensure that all required pre packing and shipping inspections are done.
  • Ensure the proper coordination of delivery of consignments to the carrier.
  • Issue appropriate forwarding instructions to agents/carriers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The packing, marking and labelling requirements are identified for specific transport modes taking into consideration optimisation principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The packing, marking and labelling requirements are identified for each product/market combination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Packing, marking and labelling procedures are prepared and continuously updated for each mode of transport and each product/market combination. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Ensure that all required pre-packing and shipping inspections are carried out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The pre-packing and shipping inspection procedures are determined for each product/market combination as they relate to different products and markets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pre-packing and shipping inspection procedures are prepared and continuously updated for different products and markets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required certification as proof that pre-packing and shipping inspections have been carried out is obtained in accordance with statutory requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Ensure the co-ordination of delivery of consignments to the carrier. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A delivery plan is processed with all the carriers down the supply chain in accordance with the sales contract. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Documentary proof of receipt in accordance to delivery plan is obtained for different products and markets. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Issue forwarding instructions to agents/carriers, verify forwarders' documentation and confirm arrival of goods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The forwarding requirements of the transaction are determined in accordance with the sales contract and relevant payment instruments, particularly documentary credits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Forwarding instructions are issued in conformity with the determined forwarding requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Forwarders' documentation is verified as correct according to the forwarding instructions and relevant financial instruments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Arrival of goods at destination is confirmed according to forwarding instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or an ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any Institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a MOU exists with the relevant ETQA.
