PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to equip learners with the basic knowledge and skills to perform as a disc jockey. This includes the ability to operate the requisite equipment and demonstrate the basic techniques for a basic disc jockey performance.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding the historical development of disc jockey music and styles.
  • Operating and connecting Disk Jockey equipment.
  • Understanding the ear and basic acoustic principles.
  • Learning to operate and connect turntable and CD players.
  • Demonstrating disc jockey techniques.

    Basic sound wave and responses is understood and how it applies to disk jockeying according to industry practice.

    Disk jockey housekeeping rules are understood and maintained, according to local disk jockeying practice.

    Understand how the human ear works and the basic acoustic principles.

    Anatomy of the ear is and explained and the parts of the human ear are identified according to industry practice.

    Importance of using hearing equipment and ear protection is understood and explained as per organisational specifications.

    The psycho acoustic principle is understood and its importance to disk jockeying is explained as per organisational specifications.

    Techniques to tune-in and the use of masking abilities are developed according to industry practice.

    Learn to operate and connect turntable and CD players.

    Backtracking mechanism are recognised and applied using turntable according to standard practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Slip mat is understood and applied as per industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Basic techniques and methods cueing and catching the first beat is practiced as per industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Controls of the turntable and/or compact disk player are operated according to manufacturers' instructions.

    Demonstrate disk jockey techniques.

    Sampling techniques are practiced and demonstrated according to provider specifications.

    Use of control pitch is used to pace tracks according to desired speed as per provider specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bars and beats are juggled to specific dance music as per provider specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Scratching technique is demonstrated to suit specific dance music as per specified instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
    . Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 3 qualification in the music field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this US or assessing this US, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
