PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is specifically for learners in the Footwear Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in the Bottomstock department of a footwear
factory. Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying all necessary operations to produce bottomstock component parts.
  • Selecting machinery, equipment and consumables to produce bottomstock parts.
  • Preparing materials, machinery and equipment for bottomstock production processes.
  • Performing hand, basic machine and specialised machine operations to produce bottomstock component parts. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to manufacturing processes within the Footwear industry.

    Bottomstock components may include, but are not limited to:
  • Insoles.
  • Outsoles.
  • Mid-soles.
  • Heels.
  • Runners.
  • Shank boards.
  • Seat pieces.
  • Toppieces.
  • Heel lifts.
  • Toepuffs.
  • Stiffeners.

    The standard covers the manufacturing processes relating to bottomstock component production, but is not limited to:
  • Specific footwear construction types.
  • Specific materials.
  • Specific combinations of materials.
  • Specific consumables.
  • Specific production processes.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify all the operations that are necessary to produce bottomstock components for footwear.

    Identify and select machinery, equipment, materials used to produce bottomstock components.

    Machinery, equipment and materials used to produce bottomstock components are listed and described in terms of relevant specification requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of identified machinery and equipment for producing bottomstock components is listed and described in terms of machinery manufacturers specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare materials, machinery and equipment for bottomstock production processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Materials are prepared for bottomstock processing as required for production processes according to standard operating procedures in the work place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selected machinery and equipment for producing specific components is set up in accordance with manufacturers specifications and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ancillary tools and equipment are prepared for production processes as required in terms of job specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform hand, basic machine and specialised machine operations to produce bottomstock components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hand and machine operations to complete the required bottomstock components are selected and performed, in compliance with the requirements of the work ticket. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Conformance of performed operations to standard operating procedures and quality standards is verified in terms of customer specification requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
