PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is specifically for learners in the Footwear Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in the Pattern department of a footwear factory. Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Selecting the materials and equipment required to produce footwear patterns.
  • Producing a mean forme for closed back footwear.
  • Producing a standard for closed back footwear.
  • Producing all relevant patterns as shown on the standard. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This standard applies to the Footwear sector.

    Operations may include, but are not limited to:
  • Preparation and covering of a last.
  • Production of a mean forme.
  • Conversion to base pattern or standard.
  • Application of design detail.
  • Pattern dissection.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and select the materials and equipment required to produce footwear patterns.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant materials are listed and described as required for pattern production processes applied in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate tools and equipment are listed and described for pattern production according to job specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Produce a mean forme for closed back footwear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Lasts are covered with appropriate material and centre lines are cut through as required for the production of formes in terms of standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Half formes are removed, flattened and cut out as required for the production of a two dimensional mean forme in terms of standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A mean forme is produced from 2 half formes as required for the production of patterns in terms of design specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Produce a standard for closed back footwear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate allowances and restrictions are added as necessary for pattern production as required for manufacturing processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specified design lines, stitching detail and construction information required for pattern production is added according to style specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Produce all relevant patterns as shown on the standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant construction allowances are added and a set of patterns is produced according to design details on the standard and relevant job specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All relevant marker slots and location aids are added to appropriate patterns as required for product assembly according to job specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A sample ticket for prototype production is developed according to job the specification. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
