PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the qualification. It is specifically for learners in the Footwear and General Goods Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in the Cutting department of a relevant factory. Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying the operations required to produce cut product component parts.
  • Identifying and selecting machinery, equipment and materials to produce cut product components.
  • Preparing materials, consumables, machinery and equipment for producing cut parts.
  • Producing selected component parts by performing hand and machine operations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to manufacturing processes within the Footwear and General Goods sectors. Operations may include, but are not limited to:
  • Leather cutting by hand or machine.
  • Synthetic upper material cutting.
  • Textile material cutting.
  • Board cutting.
  • Cutting of reinforcements.

    The standard covers the component parts for, but is not limited to, the following basic products:
  • Leather and synthetic footwear of differing types.
  • Handbags, carrier bags.
  • Belts.
  • Hats.
  • Luggage.
  • Wallets and purses.
  • Satchels.
  • Upholstery.

    Identify the operations required to produce cut product component parts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The component parts of a selected style are identified and listed in terms of the design specification requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All relevant operations for producing the listed component parts are identified and described in terms of standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and select machinery, equipment and materials to produce cut product components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Machinery and equipment used to produce cut component parts as specified, is listed and described according to machinery manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Materials used to produce cut component parts as specified, are listed and described in terms of manufacturers specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare materials, consumables, machinery and equipment for producing cut product components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Specified consumables are prepared as required for component part production processes in the work place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specified materials for production processes on selected machinery are prepared according to job specifications and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Selected machinery for producing specific components is set up in accordance with manufacturers specifications and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Ancillary tools and equipment are prepared for production processes as required in terms of job specifications in the workplace. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Produce component parts for a selected product by performing hand and machine operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hand and machine operations to produce component parts from provided materials are selected and performed, in compliance with the requirements of the work ticket. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Conformance of performed operations to standard operating procedures and quality standards is verified. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.

  • The purposes and uses of consumables used in cutting processes.
  • Work instructions and standard operating procedures applicable to cutting processes.
