PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is specifically for learners in the Textile Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in dyeing and print colouration in a relevant factory.

Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Preparing colouration laboratory equipment and material.
  • Mixing dyes, chemicals and print pastes to a recipe.
  • Producing laboratory samples to confirm to recipes.
  • Producing bulk mixings. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to manufacturing processes within the Textile sector.

    Operations may include, but are not limited to:
  • manual and automatic dispensing and mixing on a variety of substrates.
  • dyeing and/or printing colouration.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare colouration laboratory equipment and material. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Standard laboratory and/or colouration equipment is selected in accordance with relevant recipes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Functionality, cleanliness and accuracy of colouration is ensured as well as ancillary equipment to standard laboratory practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant process recipes/specifications are obtained and confirmed according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Substrate fibre contents and characteristics are determined and recorded according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Mix dyes, chemicals and print pastes to a recipe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Dyes and chemicals are selected to conform with process instructions and Company standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selected dyes, chemicals and print pastes are dispensed, weighed and recorded in order to conform with the recipe instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Solutions are mixed in accordance with mixing procedures and time factors to produce correctly dissolved Colouration mediums. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Standard tests are carried out in order to confirm colour, pH value, viscosity and specific gravity results. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Produce laboratory samples to confirm to recipes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Sample substrate material are selected and prepared for the selected colouration process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sample colouration and finishing processes are carried out using sample colouration equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tests are carried out in order to confirm colouration and finishing results of prepared samples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Any necessary modifications are implemented in order to recipes and confirm final Colouration process results. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Produce bulk mixings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Bulk amounts of mixings are calculated based on substrate parameters, process operations and volume of substrate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Bulk amounts are selected, measured and mixed according to final recipe information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Final colouration materials are delivered in order to process area and record amounts used and returned wastage figures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
