PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence against this standard will be able to apply and monitor fundamental controls relevant to leather manufacturing through reading and applying recipes, process sheets and standard operating procedures, identifying, measuring and applying chemicals, reading, applying and recording process applications and recording time accurately.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Receiving and inspecting leather.
  • Measuring, assessing and marking hides.
  • Selecting and laying out setups, tools and equipment.
  • Operating cutting department machines.
  • Counting, stacking and batching components.
  • Completing cutting schedules, job cards and quality assurance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent to NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Applies to chrome, chrome free and vegetable processes.
  • The processes in cutting include:
    > Measuring.
    > Hide marking.
    > Storing.
    > Issuing.
    > Cutting.
    > Inspecting.
    > Identification marking (foil stamp / labeling).
    > Laminating.
    > Perforating.
    > Dry splitting.
    > Packing.
    > Auditing.
    > Despatching.
  • The machines and equipment used in cutting will include:
    > Cutting press.
    > Measuring machines.
    > Cutting knives.
    > Substance gauge.
    > Cutting boards.
    > Dry splitter.
    > Hot foil-stamping machines.
    > Perforating machines.
    > Laminating machines.
    > Bag sealing machines.
    > Labeling guns.
    > Inspection / marking tables.
    > Templates.
  • The chemicals and materials used in cutting will include:
    > Finished leather.
    > Chalk.
    > Laminating foam.
    > Boxes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Leather is received in accordance with production plans for cutting processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Leather is inspected in accordance with customer specifications for scratches, marks and any blemishes and defects according to customer criteria manual. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Measure, assess and mark hides. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hides are measured for size and substance using appropriate tools, patterns and customer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The quality of hides is assessed in accordance with customer quality specifications and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hides are appropriately marked applying standard company marking procedures and work instructions for further cutting processes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Select and lay out setups, tools and equipment.

    Appropriate tools for cutting processes are selected and laid out in compliance with stipulated work instructions and standard operating procedures.

    Cutting equipment is used safely and according to manufacturer's specifications and standard operating procedures.

    Operate cutting department machines.

    Materials are loaded onto the appropriate machines according to manufacturer's specifications and standard operating procedures.

    Cutting equipment is utilised safely and according to manufacturers specifications and standard operating.

    Count, stack and batch components.

    Leather components are stacked according to standard company procedures and production plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Leather components are counted according to standard company procedures and production plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Leather components are batched according to standard company procedures and production plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stacking, counting and batching figures are recorded accurately according to company specifications and standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Complete cutting schedules, job cards and quality assurance.

    Leather cutting jobs are completed successfully within timeframes and according to job cards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Job schedules are completed timorously and correctly according to laid down job schedule specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Non-conformance to cutting processes is reported on immediately in compliance with specified reporting procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
