PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to describe the principles of separating liquids and solids using centrifugal force. They are also able to prepare for and separate liquids using centrifugal force and able to end the separation procedure as well as identify and solve any problems that occur during the separation process.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of separating liquids and solids using centrifugal force.
  • Preparing to separate liquids and solids.
  • Separating liquids using centrifugal force.
  • Perform end of separation procedures.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners accessing this unit standard will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • General safety in the workplace at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
In the context of this unit standard a centrifugal separator refers to a manually or automatically operated centrifugal separator.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Principles of specific centrifugal separation are described in accordance with standard physical and chemical principles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Individual components of the specific centrifugal separating system are identified and an explanation given of the purpose of each.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Prepare to separate liquids and solids.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Centrifugal and ancillary equipment is inspected according to standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The centrifugal separator is prepared and started in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Parameters for separation are set according to standard operating procedures and site specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Reasons for specific values of the different parameters are explained in accordance with standards physical principles, manufacturer's specifications and minimum legislative specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Problems during start up are reported and solved in accordance with organisational standards and procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Separate liquids and solids using centrifugal force.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Liquids and solids are separated according to standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Equipment is handled according to standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Separated liquids and solids are produced to conform to site-specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Separation problems are identified and handled within required timeframe and in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Perform end of separation procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The centrifugal separator is shut down according to standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Symptoms and possible causes of faults that occur during the equipment shut down are identified and corrective actions are taken in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Equipment is cleaned and ready for re-use in the designated area in accordance with vessel standards and procedures.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
