PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to identify and fit tack on a horse and prepare the horse for riding. The person will also be able to take apart, clean and re-assemble tack as well as be able to identify, fit and care for horse blankets and boots.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Identify and fitting basic tack on a horse to prepare it for riding.
  • Taking apart, cleaning and re-assembling basic tack.
  • Identifying, fitting and caring for, horse blankets in common use.
  • Identifying, fitting and caring for horse boots.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and fit basic tack on a horse. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Items of basic tack are bridle, numnah, saddle, martingales, girths, reins, stirrups. Bridle excludes a double bridle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Items of basic tack are named by pointing them out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Basic tack is fitted to a horse according to international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not fitting the basic tack according to international standards are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Take apart, clean and re-assemble basic tack.

    Bridle and saddle fittings are taken apart into individual components.

    Saddle and bridle fittings are cleaned using the correct cleaning materials.

    Saddle and bridle fittings are checked for damage and any items requiring attention are reported to authorised individuals.

    A bridle and saddle with fittings are re-assembled ready for use.

    Items of tack are stored in accordance with organisations requirements.

    Blanket types, including but not limited to travel rugs, day rugs, sweat rugs, rain sheet, light and heavy winter rugs, and exercise rugs.
