PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to explain process piping, fittings and valves.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Explain the application of piping and fittings in process applications.
  • Describe pipe coverings.
  • Identify valve components and explain valve functioning in a process system.
  • Trace and analyse pipe networks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of piping and fittings are described in terms of process applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of fittings includes but is not limited to Ts, elbows, flanges, blinds, reducers, traps, caps and expansion bellows.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Standard pipe sizes are listed as applicable to process applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Standard fittings are identified as applicable to process applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The purpose and applications for different piping materials are described in terms of process applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of materials includes but is not limited to PVC, steel and stainless steel.

    Key colour-coding for pipes is identified and the purpose is described in terms of process applications.

    The purpose and applications for thermal insulation on pipes are explained in terms of process applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose and applications for heat tracing on pipes are explained in terms of process applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Process applications where thermal insulation and heat tracing are used are identified on the plant according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The purpose and applications for different piping materials are described in terms of process applications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Valves are identified and the purpose of using valves is described in terms of a process system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of valves includes, but is not limited to butterfly-, gate-, globe-, plug-, ball-, safety-, diaphragm-, non-return (check), safety- (SV) and relieve valves (RV).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The advantages and disadvantages of using different valve types are explained in terms of a process system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Valve components are identified and their functions described in terms of a process system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Basic working principles of the different valve types are described with the assistance of freehand drawings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Valve and control valve positions are recognised as open, partially open or closed in a process system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Indicators and reasons for non-optimal performance of valves are identified and described in terms of a process system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of reasons may include but are not limited to corrosion, exposure to high temperature, poor lubrication, mechanical obstructions and leaking seals.

    Reasons for using control valves are explained in terms of a process system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A freehand drawing is made of a pipe system by tracing the system through the plant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Flows are indicated in a freehand drawing of a piping system by interpreting open and closed valves, control valves, check valves and pumping direction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of opening and closing certain valves in the system is explained in terms of process applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for piping and valve configurations are explained in terms of process applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of configurations includes but is not limited to placement of flanges, valves, expansion bellows, use of surface and elevated pipe racks and bypass configurations.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Valve adjustments are made under supervision according to operational procedures and instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Adjustments include opening, closing, partially opening and -closing valves.
