Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to explain solid, liquid and gas transfer equipment in a processing environment.

    Different types of pumps and their process applications are described as applicable to operational procedures.

    The range of pumps includes centrifugal, reciprocating and rotary pumps.

    The advantages and disadvantages of different pump types are explained in terms of process applications.

    Symbols used to indicate pumps are used in freehand drawings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Indicators and reasons for poor pump performance are described in terms of process applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The reasons include electric faults, bearing failure, fluid temperature, low feed tank level, fluid composition, cavitations, mechanical problems, corrosion, leaking seals.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Drive equipment and equipment used to transfer power to pumps, compressors and materials transfer equipment are explained in terms of process applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of power equipment includes electric-, diesel- and turbine motors. The range of power transfer equipment includes gearboxes, direct-, chain- and belt drives.

    Safety features and equipment are explained in terms of operational procedures.

    Configurations include feed tank, suction line, discharge line, return line, standby pump, and motor with switchgear and block valves.

    Configuration includes compressor, gas inlet, knockout drum, suction line, discharge line, bypass line, block valves and motor.

    High-pressure safety devices are identified and their purpose described in accordance with operational procedures.

    Safety devices include spillback lines, relief valves (RVs), safety valves (SVs), bursting discs, trips and alarms.

    Advantages and disadvantages of belt-, screw- and pneumatic conveyors are explained in terms of process applications.

    Freehand drawings of simple bulk solids handling equipment system configurations are made and explained according to instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Configurations include loading chutes, product outlet, slopes, elevation angles, changes in slope, and changes in direction.
