In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The purpose of the learning is to be able to find information (e.g. information about subject areas in advertising, assignment specifications, resources, etc.), from various sources that are relevant for specific advertising assignments, and to synthesise the information in such as a way as to facilitate decision-making.

Selecting the right information to inform specific advertising assignments, contributes to the quality of work produced, thus empowering the learner. It prevents time wastage; it improves assignment and personal effectiveness; it ensures an improved understanding of needs of specific assignments; it creates the opportunity to discover 'unexpected', unique information relevant for assignments, and new or unique ways of approaching assignments.

The competence of information selection is transferable to any field, and has become very important in all areas of businesses, including especially entrepreneurship. Effective synthesis of information facilitates the management of the so-called 'information explosion' by ensuring that the focus is on the quality of information instead of large quantities of information. Effective information management leads to relevant, actionable insights - a valuable asset for the advertising industry.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Defining information parameters required to address advertising requirements.
  • Accessing information sources relevant for defined information needs.
  • Evaluating information value against given specifications (briefs).
  • Synthesising information to address specifications.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credits and level assigned to this unit standard is based on the assumption that learners have already attained the following competencies:
  • Communication and language at NQF Level 4.
  • Gather, record and interpret business related information at NQF Level 4.
  • Process data using information technology at NQF Level 4.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Credited learners are required to access existing information from relevant sources, and to collate and synthesise this information to make recommendations to decision-makers. However, they are not required to make final decisions based on the information. For example, they may be required to recommend preferred suppliers based on information gathered about them, but would not be required decide which specific supplier/s is appointed.

Additional range statements are provided with specific outcomes and assessment criteria where relevant.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Define information parameters required to address advertising requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Scope of information required is defined in terms of required advertising output.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Evaluate information value against given specifications (briefs).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Evaluation criteria are developed that would determine if given specifications are adequately addressed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Information is evaluated in terms of relevance for defined information needs and given specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Information is evaluated in consultation with all relevant persons, taking into account all their requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Information gaps are addressed to ensure that all specifications are met.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Redundant information is organised and stored according to organisational procedures and in specified structure.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Synthesise information to address specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Information presentation formats and technology are selected that best represent and present content.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Information is grouped based on value, innovativeness and usefulness for solution development.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Grouping includes combining information to create value (e.g. connecting facts).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Information is synthesised with deliberate emphasis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Recommendations are made regarding the application of information for solution development against specifications.

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
    Notes to Assessors:

Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the learner is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the learner can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
