PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who are required to interpret legislation and policy as it pertains to professional hunting in order to contribute to economic and conservation viability in the operational area.

Learners achieving this unit standard will be able to apply professional hunting legislation and will be able to:
  • Categorize the various huntable species of wild animals into the various schedules according to provincial nature conservation legislation.
  • Categorize the various South African indigenous and exotic species of wild animals into the CITES Appendices.
  • Apply the provisions of hunting legislation applicable to the hunting of a wild or exotic animal.
  • Outline the provisions of the Firearms Control Act and Regulations pertaining to professional hunting.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    It is further assumed that learner attempting this unit standard has been operational as a recreational hunter for a period of two years and has a basic understanding of the Firearms Control Act and other relevant legislation including the Tourism Act, the Road Transport Act, the Veterinary Act and should operate within the framework of the relevant legislation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Categorize indigenous and exotic huntable species of wild animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Huntable species of wild animals are categorised into the various schedules according to Provincial Nature Conservation Legislation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ordinary game, protected game, special protected game, damage-causing animals.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Indigenous wild animal species are categorized into the CITES Appendices 1 and 2 in line with relevant legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Prescribed procedures are followed in respect of CITES permit applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Exotic wild animal species are categorized into the CITES Appendices 1 and 2 in line with relevant legislation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply the provisions of provincial legislation applicable to the hunting of a wild or exotic animal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The framework of provincial Acts and Ordinances related to the hunting of wild or exotic animals is applied to ensure compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The provisions of provincial legislation pertaining to the hunting of wild or exotic animals are applied to the planning, preparation, conducting and conclusion of a guided hunting experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Indigenous and exotic wild animal species are categorized into the CITES Appendices 1 and 2 in line with relevant legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Details are provided of minimum calibres and legal hunting weapons to be used in the hunting of wild and exotic animals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Applicable hunting documentation containing guidelines and procedures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An outline is provided of the relevant sections of Nature Conservation legislation pertaining to professional hunters.

    Explain the Firearms Control Act and Regulations as it relates to professional hunting.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The legal parameters of the Firearms Control Act and other regulations are explained with reference to the professional hunter. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An outline is provided of the process for applying for relevant hunting weapons licences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Procedures are explained for obtaining permission for the temporary importation, conveyance and storage of weapons and ammunition in camp.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
