PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to demonstrate understanding of basic automotive gas system equipment including carburettor systems and simple fuel injection systems. Advanced fuel injection systems, sequential gas injection (SGI) systems and air conditioning systems do not form part of the outcomes described in this Unit Standard.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Describe typical automotive gas installation equipment and configurations.
  • Describe different automotive gas storage and supply equipment and configurations.
  • Describe different automotive gas delivery and control equipment and systems.
  • Describe different automotive gas applications. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The context of this unit standard assumes an automotive gas installation feeding either a carburettor or a simple fuel injection system. The scope of this unit standard includes, but is not limited to, one of the following:
  • LPG installations.
  • Compressed natural gas installations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different applications of automotive gas installations and their associated gas types are listed and compared based on a wide range of current local and international applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Applications include different carburettor systems, simple fuel injection systems, advanced fuel injection systems, sequential gas injection systems and hybrid fuel cell systems.
  • Gas types include but are not limited to LPG and compressed natural gas.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The layout of different basic automotive gas systems are described based on typical South African installations and accepted industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Components of typical basic automotive gas installations are identified using accepted industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Material selection considerations for typical basic automotive gas installations are described in terms of both safety and fit for purpose considerations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The functioning of typical basic automotive gas installations and the role of each of the individual components in the system are explained.

    Describe different automotive gas storage and supply equipment and configurations.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 3 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an assessor with considerable first hand experience in gas installations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions is required.
