PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is intended for individuals dealing with the orientation, navigation use and creating of information maps in conservation areas.

Individuals credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge applicable to map use and orientation within a specific operational area and will also be able to plot and use information through the use of maps in the operational environment. Navigation, map reading, plotting and communication skills utilised for the transfer of information and directions will enable orientation of the individual in the operational and nature conservation environment.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Communicate directions to specific locations according to the requirements of the situation.
  • Find, orientate and navigate along a route to a specified destination.
  • Read, interpret and use maps.
  • Draw and/or create simple maps.
  • Plot information on a map using symbols.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

    Read, interpret and use maps.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An appropriate map type is selected as it applies to the terrain and the purpose for use.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Cadastral, relief, road map, vegetation maps, census data maps, distribution maps.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The user is orientated to the map using compass points (such as true and magnetic north).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Real locations, distances, areas and relative positions are identified through the use of map reading and interpretation of information.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Symbols such as roads, powerlines, railways, rivers, beacons, Scale, (for example. 1:50,000); Measurements (e.g. distance and area); Co-ordinates (e.g. GPS and/or six-figure grid references, etc.) Triangulation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Map errors and shortcomings are identified and corrected in accordance with industry norms and standards.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Roads, boundaries, firebreaks, rivers, vegetative species distribution, grid-squares.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Contour lines are interpreted and explained in accordance with industry standards.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Aspect; elevation; topography.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Draw and/or create simple maps.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Simple maps are drawn to ensure that the relative positions of places and objects match the real situation for record purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Where appropriate, a suitable scale is chosen, indicated and correctly applied.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Symbols, conforming to conventional uses, or defined through a key or legend is used in the drawing and/or creating of simple maps.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Diagrams and models used in the drawing of maps depict the area and/or landform accurately to enable reading and interpretation by other users.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The drawing or creating of maps is concluded in a clear and neat manner to ensure that it contains all critical information as required by the situation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Plot information on a map using symbols.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A range of symbols and keys are used to mark specific areas in the operational environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The relevant information on the map is indicated accurately as per grid reference or co-ordinates.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements. Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
    Problem solving:
  • This ability is called for when the need arises to find alternative routes.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
    Teamwork:
  • Local wildlife has to be monitored and identified in the field. The work required by this unit standard is not a paper exercise, but must be practically carried out. This requires the learner to function as an effective team member, cooperating with supervisors and other colleagues.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
    Communication:
  • This unit standard promotes effective communication in that the learner is challenged to describe routes and locations using everyday language. The drawing of maps and plotting of important information on a map are both specialized forms of visual communication.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
    Use of science and technology:
  • The use of compasses and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and other mapping apparatus are a central focus of this unit standard.

  • UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
    Values:

Demonstration of the knowledge and skills outlined in this unit standard must be consistent with the principles of:
  • Maintaining essential ecological processes and life-support systems.
  • Maintaining species and ecosystem diversity.
  • Considering ecological and social rights and responsibilities, whilst ensuring sustainable utilisation of species and ecosystems.

Thereby yielding the greatest sustainable and equitable benefit to present generations whilst maintaining the potential to meet the needs and aspirations of future generations.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
