PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons operating within the electronics environment. This unit standard will provide learners with knowledge and understanding of elementary electronic principles and practices.

Learners accredited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Performing calculations on series and parallel network of resistors using Ohm`s law.
  • Applying Kirchoff`s laws to various networks.
  • Performing basic capacitor calculations relating to transients.
  • Performing basic transformer calculations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematics at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Basic theories include but are not limited to elementary key concepts in electronics. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Perform calculations on series and parallel circuits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Calculations are performed to simplify the total resistance of the network. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Calculations refer to calculations done on series, parallel, combination resistive, capacitive and inductive circuits.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Calculations are performed in series, parallel and combination circuits that consist of cells only to determine the potential differences. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform calculations using Ohm's law. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ohm's law is defined in terms of the relationship between current, voltage and resistance in closed circuits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Calculations are performed to determine unknown quantities when two of the quantities in a circuit are known. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Quantities refer to resistances, voltage, power and current within closed circuits.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Electro-motive force, potential difference and internal resistances are calculated to determine the unknown quantity if two of the quantities in a circuit are known. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Formulae for Ohm's law and resistivity are transposed to solve for an unknown quantity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform calculations using Kirchoff`s laws. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Voltage and current dividers are described in terms of Kirshoff's Laws. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The description must include the current and voltage laws.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Calculations are performed between applied voltage and voltage drops in closed circuits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Calculations are performed between input current versus output current in closed circuits. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform basic impedance, capacitive reactance and inductive reactance (RLC) calculations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    RL and RC circuits are calculated inclusive of phasor diagrams to determine the total impedance. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    RL and RC circuits refer to both parallel and series circuits.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Calculations are performed in order to determine different variables. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different variables include but are not limited to values, voltage, current, capacitors, resistors and impedance.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Charge is calculated from given values of capacitance, applied voltage, live current, and time. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Perform basic transformer calculations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Calculations relating to primary and secondary circuits are performed to determine unknown values in an ideal transformer. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ideal transformer refers to a transformer that operates without power losses.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Voltage, current and windings values and quantities are determined according to the transformer ratios. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in this Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the Exit Level Outcome of the Qualification.
  • Moderators should be in possession of a Qualification in Electronics or a related sub-field at a minimum of NQF Level 4.
