PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be able to demonstrate knowledge of music instruments and notational conventions to arrange music in a new format.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Applying knowledge of a variety of instrumental and vocal combinations.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of notational conventions.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of range and idiom of selected combinations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply knowledge of a variety of instrumental and vocal combinations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Combinations include, but is not limited to 3:

    Choir, brass band, string orchestra, string quartet, jazz band, symphonic orchestra, military band, marimba ensemble, reed orchestra etc.

    A portfolio of arrangements is produced in relation to the original versions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Music is arranged in relation to knowledge of the chosen medium.

    Demonstrate knowledge of notational conventions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Notational conventions appropriate to the instruments and genres are demonstrated according to standard music industry practice.

    Arranged music is presented in a format in accordance with standard music industry practice.

    Demonstrate knowledge of range and idiom of selected combinations.

    Music is arranged within the accepted parameters of the instrument/voice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Instrumental parts are notated in appropriate clefs and with transposition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Arranged music demonstrates the range and appropriate idiom of the chosen combinations. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the Specific Outcomes as well as the integrated competence described in this Unit Standard.

  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with a relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors must be in possession of a Qualification in the field of Culture and Arts or the sub-field of Music at a minimum of NQF Level 6.
