PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who attend to an incident or crime scene. This unit standard will enable learners to conduct an initial investigation and enable them to interview suspects, witnesses and complainants found at the incident or crime scene. This unit standard will also enable learners to take down statements and keep records of information obtained.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Assess the nature of an incident of crime scene.
  • Conduct an initial investigation of incident or crime scene.
  • Interview role-players.

    Types of possible incidents are described in line with the nature of the report to be used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • The nature of the report refer to any type of crime.
  • Types of incidents or crime scenes refer to but are not limited to primary, secondary, ongoing, indoor or outdoor.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of reports are assessed in line with the elements of the incident. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Aspects to be taken into account when attending to an incident are evaluated to inform actions to be taken. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Aspects refer to but are not limited to note taking, quickest and safest route, safety measurements and seriousness of the crime.

    Resources needed at the incident are explained in line with organizational prescripts.

    Ways of securing evidence and exhibits are assessed in terms of its influence on potential evidential value of articles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ways of securing a crime scene refer to but are not limited to using police marked type, establishing entry and exiting points and closing of gates.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods to avoid cross-contamination are evaluated to ensure the integrity of evidence and exhibits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons why oral accounts of the incident are obtained and retained are explained in line with evidential value.

    Role-players at the incident or crime scene are identified and handled according to their role and function at the scene.

    Interviewing of role-players are described in terms of their role within the incident. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Aspects to take into account during the interview is evaluated in terms of the Constitution of South Africa, Chapter 2 Bill of Rights and current legislation.

    The need for the use of an interpreter is described for the purpose of clear communication. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Methods of capturing information about the interview is assessed in order to review their future use.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual who wishes to be assessed against this unit standard (including assessment of RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. Assessors must be competent in the outcome of the Unit Standard.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
