PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for supervisors and junior managers. This unit standard will enable a supervisor or recreation officer to assess a client's experience, competencies, and interests and attitude in recreation and be able to advise them on a particular lifestyle by assessing the available opportunities for participation.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Distinguishing a client's previous and current leisure and recreation experience, competencies, and interests.
  • Explaining opportunities available to the client for achieving a preferred lifestyle.
  • Assessing a client's motivational factors and constraints in participating in leisure and recreation activities.
  • Advising the client on developing future action plans. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Computer skills at NQF Level 4. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Client assessments are non-judgmental and are undertaken with the client. Problem solving is facilitated with the client and responsibility for all decisions remains with the client. Client assessment and problem solving may include liaison with relevant agencies with which the client is involved (e.g. if a client has a sight impairment it might be important to link with the Association for the Blind).
  • In the context of this unit standard, lifestyle may include: Career, home, family, volunteering, leisure activities, income, values and beliefs, living patterns, cultural attitudes.
  • In the context of this unit standard, leisure and recreation needs to be interpreted in their broadest possible sense, and from the client's perspective, not the advisors.
  • In the context of this unit standard, client requirements, and needs include: Life cycle and life style factors, opportunities and constraints, interests, and preferences.
  • Work with clients in relation to this unit standard must be completed with the strictest confidentiality. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Distinguish between a client's previous and current leisure and recreation experience, competencies, and interests. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client's previous and current leisure and recreation experience is identified and documented in a report. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The assessment establishes the client's philosophy on participation in leisure and recreation through a variety of techniques including interviews, questionnaires and discussion. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The assessment identifies and describes the client's interests with regards to the type of leisure time activities they would be willing to participate in. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An assessment of the client's current situation ascertains the ability, and fitness levels so that appropriate activities can be recommended to make changes to the clients lifestyle. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain opportunities available to the client for achieving a preferred lifestyle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An evaluation report is prepared which recognizes a client's preferred lifestyle and makes recommendations for participation in leisure time activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The review identifies career options which contribute to the preferred lifestyle and informs the client about the opportunities available in the leisure industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The appraisal identifies and constructs home management options, which can assist the client to make preferred lifestyle changes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The client is informed as to what recreation and leisure opportunities can contribute to the preferred lifestyle. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assess a client's motivational factors and constraints in participating in leisure and recreation activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Opportunities and constraints in terms of participation in leisure and recreation activities are explained to the client.

    The life cycle and life style characteristics in relation to the identified opportunities and constraints of the client are investigated and described.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A measuring tool is used to assess the client's level of motivation to participate in leisure and recreation.

    Advise the client on developing future action plans.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Strategies are developed in consultation with client for balancing career, home and family, income, leisure, and recreation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Interventions required to establish preferred lifestyle are developed in consultation with client, and are relevant to client's requirements and needs as established during the interview, discussion, or questionnaire. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Short, medium, and long term plans are developed in consultation with the client and meet the client's requirements and needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Strategies for implementing the short, medium, and long-term plans are developed in consultation with client, and meet client's requirements and needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The need to review the plans and strategy to implement such plans to evaluate progress and reassess future action is explained to client. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • This Unit Standard will be assessed by an assessor and moderated by a moderator registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
  • Assessors should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard.
  • Training providers must be accredited by a relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
