This unit standard allows the qualifying learner to understand and apply the principles and processes of community recreation to enhance community development through the advancement of skills, collaboration and service delivery.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the values and philosophy upon which community recreation and community development is based.
  • Define the roles of the recreation worker in relation to community recreation processes.
  • Facilitate a community recreation project with the emphasis on community development.
  • Discuss the processes of community development and how these relate to the principles of community recreation and community recreation.

  • In the context of this unit standard, a community may pertain to ethnicity, gender, age, geographic boundaries, workplace, special need, special interest.
  • The principles of community recreation include establishing culturally appropriate processes which enable diverse communities to develop and meet their own needs through recreation initiatives which may include - projects, programmes, events, activities, rallies, meetings and festivals.
  • In the context of this unit standard, the principles of community development include establishing culturally appropriate processes which enable diverse communities to develop and explore their own identity and expression.
  • In the context of this unit standard, processes of community recreation and community development may include:
    > Research.
    > Consultation.
    > Networking.
    > Power sharing.
    > Encouraging autonomy.
    > Linking disciplines: Art, design, engineering, health, parks.
    > Recruitment of local resource people.
    > Project development.
