PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible to prepare borehole cuttings for logging and sampling purposes.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate the knowledge required to prepare (handle and lay out) borehole cuttings correctly for logging and sampling purposes.
  • Prepare to lay out the borehole cuttings.
  • Lay out the borehole cuttings.
  • Conduct post laying out activities and compile a report.

    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard covers the preparation of borehole cuttings that were recovered from drilling operations and transported in containers to a logging and sampling facility.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate the knowledge required to prepare (handle and lay out) borehole cuttings correctly.

    The accepted principles are explained for laying out borehole cuttings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The contents and requirements of the work instruction and the consequences of non-compliance with the requirements are described in terms of the potential effect on the logging and sampling procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of laying out the borehole cuttings in accordance with the accepted procedures is described in terms of the effect on the logging and sampling results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The procedure to crush over-size material is described in terms of operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of reducing the particle size of over-size material is described to prevent bias when the sampler is collecting material for analyses purposes.

    Prepare to lay out the borehole cuttings.

    Permission to enter the workplace, when required, is obtained in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is selected and examined for any defects and used in accordance with legal and laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defective personal protective equipment is dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The tools, materials and equipment required for laying out borehole cuttings are selected, examined and verified in accordance with the work instruction received. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Defective tools, materials and equipment are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Potential and actual hazardous and sub-standard conditions found during the examination of the workplace are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures.

    Lay out borehole cuttings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Work related hazards and associated risks that have an effect on a safe and healthy work environment are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include any one or a combination of the following:
  • Eye/facial injuries.
  • Hand and foot injuries.
  • Incorrect lifting procedures and back injuries.
  • Chemical burns.
  • Inhalation of noxious and toxic gases.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The borehole cuttings are washed, cleaned and dried, when required in accordance with operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The borehole cuttings are examined and over-size material is identified, selected and crushed when required, using the crusher equipment in the prescribed manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The borehole cuttings are correctly laid out on the logging and sampling trays in a sequential order in accordance with accepted geological standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The borehole cuttings are examined for anomalous conditions, noted and deviations from the accepted layout procedure are accurately recorded and reported.

    The tools, materials and equipment are cleaned and ensured to be ready for future use in accordance with operational requirements.

    The workplace is cleaned to comply with documented and recognised good housekeeping practices.

    The excess cuttings material and sample containers are dealt with in accordance with the work instruction.

    The necessary report(s) are compiled in the required format and submitted to the relevant personnel in accordance with operational requirements.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
