PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals entering the health environment. Individuals credited with this standard will be able to demonstrate an understanding of terminology related to the field as well as the role of medicine in the health care environment. In addition the individual will be able to demonstrate knowledge of health promotion. This unit standard will provide individuals with the basic knowledge needed when completing other unit standards in health related fields.

    The roles and responsibilities of health care professionals are defined using examples of what is and is not permitted.

    The roles of statutory bodies regulating the health care environment are explained indicating the difference between the roles of statutuory and a non-statutory bodies.

    The roles of information, education and communication in health promotion are explained in terms of their inter-relatedness.

    Different approaches to medication are explained in relation to client preference.

    The need for people to take medication is explained focusing on the outcomes for the patient of taking such medication.

    The importance of instructions regarding the correct use of medication is explained focusing on the consequences of not complying with the instructions.

    The implications of misusing medication are explained as these affect individuals and the community.

    Appropriate interventions, where misuse of medication is suspected, are described with practical examples.
