PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the application of Air Power across the continuum of conflict. Learners will also be able to explain the roles and functions other Services play in terms of air operations, and be able to appreciate operational planning issues. Learners will also be able to explain the inter-play and co-ordination between military and non-military assets towards the employment of Air Power.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the evolution of Air Power.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of Air Power capabilities.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of Air Power within the context of air operations.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the requirements of the other Services in terms of Air Power.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the employment of South African Air Power assets.

    The continuum of conflict may include but is not limited to humanitarian assistance, peace missions and peace support operations.

    An explanation is given of the historical application of Air Power in terms of its effects on warfare.

    Demonstrate knowledge of Air Power capabilities across the continuum of conflict.

    An explanation is given of Air Power capabilities in terms of the elements of Air Power.

  • Air Power capabilities may include but are not limited to information superiority; control of the air; surface and sub-surface attack; air mobility; Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C3I), and support and sustainability.
  • The Air Power elements are fire power, mobility and information.
