PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners within the Safety in Society and Sovereignty of the State sub-fields who work in the bomb disposal environment and who are required to demolish structures, packages, suitcases, vehicles and aircraft. The learner will be able to apply conduct an assessment on the target and apply the appreciated demolition technique.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe demolition techniques.
  • Assessment of the target.
  • Prepare the charges.
  • Apply demolition techniques.

    A description is given of the types of demolition techniques according to their properties as specified by the manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Types may refer but is not limited to mechanical initiating systems, electrical initiating systems and non-electrical systems.
  • Properties refers but is not limited to resistance, voltage output, velocity of detonation and burning speed.

    A description is given of equipment used in demolition techniques according to their purposes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment refers but is not limited to shot exploders and blasting cables.

    The type of targets is analysed in order to inform the actions to be taken.

    The type of charge to be used is determined according to the analysis of the target.

    The type of explosive for utilisation in the charge is determined according to the analysis of the target.

    Safety aspects are determined in line standard operating procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
