PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners within the bomb disposal, explosives, pyrotechnics, demolitions and blasting environment who are required to show an understanding of the development and origins of explosives and the legal framework that controls the use of explosives in South Africa. Further this unit standard will enable learners to understand the impact and effect of explosions in order to inform future actions and decisions when utilising explosives. The competencies achieved in this Unit Standard will lead to a safer society for South African citizens.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history of explosives.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of legal prescripts pertaining to explosives and explosives control.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of explosions.

    A description is given of the early development and use of explosives from 600 BC to the early 1900s.

    A description is given of the development and use of explosives during the Nobel era.

    A description is given of the development and use of explosives after the Nobel era up to present. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the legal framework pertaining to explosives and explosives control.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of the development of legislation pertaining to the control of explosives in order to better understand explosives control within the South African context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Legislation is identified which has bearing on legal control measures and restrictions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legislation refers but is not limited to the Explosives Act 15 of 2003, the Explosives Act 26 of 1956, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.

    An explanation is given of the legal control measures and restrictions of the legislation.

    An explanation is given of the dynamics of an explosion from initiation to termination.

    The effect of explosions is explained on terms of their impact on the immediate environment.

  • Effect refers but is not limited to fragmentation, air blasts [positive and negative phases], shockwaves, fire and poisonous gasses.
  • The environment refers but is not limited to targets, people and structures.

    Types of explosions are identified.
