The purpose of this unit standard is to enable the learner to assist in dealing with problem gambling in the workplace, accommodating limitations, dealing with emergencies and being proactive in providing ongoing support.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of problem gambling and pathological gambling.
  • Describe the implications and consequences of problem gambling for the individual and the organisation.
  • Follow proper process when dealing with gambling and pathological gambling.
  • Explain the recovery process and implications.

    The differences between problem and pathological gambling are outlined using examples of each.

    Clusters of symptoms that indicate possible problem and pathological gambling are identified in a specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Patterns of behaviour in the workplace that indicate problem gambling are identified in a specific situation.

    Stages in the gambling dependency process are outlined stating the corresponding symptoms for each stage.

    The impact of problem gambling on an individual is explained with reference to personal consequences.

    The impact of problem gambling on co-workers is explained with examples.

    The impact of problem gambling on an organisation is explained as in terms of the possible impacts thereof. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Follow proper process when dealing with gambling and pathological gambling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process to be followed in dealing with gambling addictions and undue preoccupation with gambling at work is outlined according to company policy, procedure and sound legal practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process to be followed in dealing with problem and pathological gambling is explained with reference to the team member's or manager's role in intervening in the situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Situations where it would be necessary to refer an employee for assistance are identified and an indication is given of available professional support structures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the recovery process and implications.

    The gambling addiction treatment process is outlined and an indication is given of the importance of the process.

    The concepts of recovery and relapse are explained with examples.

    High risk situations that could contribute to a relapse are identified adequately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Specific cases are cited and suggestions are made as to how colleagues could support the treatment process.
