PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for individuals dealing with the provision of advice and the selling and promotion of nail care products/product ranges through customer interaction in a retail environment.

Individuals credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge applicable to nail care in order to add value to customer service in the retail environment, through the identification of most appropriate products, the correct communication of product features, benefits, use and application according to client/customer needs, based on the analysis of the individuals nail care requirements, nail type and condition.

Products as well as cosmetology knowledge gained will enable effective problem solving, trouble-shooting and the addressing of customer needs in accordance with the standard operational procedures and specifications of the product manufacturer and the organisation.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:

  • Promoting nail care products to meet individual needs.

    Abnormalities in the appearance of nails are identified and described according to standard industry practice.

    The different treatments required for various nail conditions are identified as they apply to the condition. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of nail care routines and nail-care products.

    Promote nail care products to meet individual needs.

    Products may include but are not limited to nail polish, nail polish remover, cuticle creams, hand creams, nail repair products, nail strengthening products, manicure and pedicure kits, artificial nails, artificial nail repair kits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Customer's nail care requirements are assessed, in order to provide appropriate advice as it relates to the individual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Referrals and the need for third party interventions are discussed with the client following organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Specific nail care products suitable to the individual's requirements and condition of the nails are recommended according to customer needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Use and application of nail care products are explained according to manufacturer's requirements.

  • The anatomy of the nail includes the skin, matrix, hard plate, lunula, nail formation and growth.
  • Abnormalities to the nail include nail irregularities, discolouring, ridges, cuticle damage, brittleness, pealing, splitting, allergies, fungal infections, in-growing nails, nail-biting.
  • Basic steps involved in nail care include: pedicures, manicures, cleaning, exfoliating, cuticle treatment, buffing, varnishing (base-coat, colour coat, top-coat) and the treatment of skin for hands.
  • The use of nail care products include the correct application of products, frequency of product use, benefits of products, potential effects of specific product types when utilised incorrectly.
  • Referrals in the event of abnormalities include any observations in terms of dermatological problems, fungal infections, anomalies in growth requiring specialist intervention.
