PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who are responsible for displaying merchandise visually in a wholesale or retail outlet.

These people are given broad outlines as to the requirements of the display but have freedom to alter the display to the requirements of the outlet and must present the display in a visually appealing manner.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Preparing to erect a visual merchandise display.
  • Adapting the visual merchandising plan to the outlet's requirements.
  • Displaying the merchandise in a visually appealing manner.

    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Evaluating a visually merchandised display.

    The use of visual merchandising plans is explained as it applies to the organisation.

    The provided guidelines are interpreted as applicable to the organisation.

    The policy of adapting visual merchandising plans to the different outlets is explained as it applies to the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The need to adapt the plan is explained as it applies to the outlet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The visual merchandise plan is adapted for implementation to the required standard as applicable to the organisation and outlet.

    Prepare to erect a visual merchandise display.

    Plan the display using the appropriate visual merchandise techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The display area is prepared according to the organisation's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stock is gathered according to the visual merchandising display plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Where required stock is not available the plan is adapted to ensure the visual display will still meet the requirements of the organisation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Display the merchandise in a visually appealing manner.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Merchandise is displayed visually to create the desired effect using visual merchandising display principals applicable to the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    High risk merchandise is displayed to prevent shrinkage and losses according to organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fixtures and props appropriate to the visual display are used in terms of the stock characteristics and organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Signage and ticketing appropriate to the display and the products is used according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Display equipment is handled in a manner that minimises damage and maintains safety of staff and customers. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
