PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The person credited with this unit standard is able to design, develop and present a Geographical Information science and technology project.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Define the project requirements.
  • Define and implement the project environment and technical parameters.
  • Define the models needed to fulfill the project.
  • Execute the project analysis successfully.
  • Complete the project.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5.
  • All of the unit standards under the Core of this qualification.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Learners should preferably undertake this unit standard as a member of a team of fellow learners and/or work colleagues.

Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

Range statements are included with specific outcomes as necesssary.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Define the GIS project requirements in terms of the scope, user requirements, deliverables and costs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The user requirements specification is developed in accordance with prescribed requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A functional outline of the project deliverables is designed and approved by the assessor, taking into account the minimum project requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
It is important to ensure that learners do not specify a project that is too big or too small. At the same time, projects should at minimum require the need for cartographic models, raster analysis, vector analysis and database manipulations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The technical scope of the document is developed and approved by the assessor, taking into account the minimum project requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including a detailed technical analysis of the functional requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
A cost analysis of the project is designed and approved by the assessor.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including but not limited to data, software, hardware, peripherals, human resources.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Define and implement the project environment and technical parameters that will meet the requirements of the project.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Hardware requirements of the project are defined terms of the scope, user requirements, deliverables and costs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Software requirements of the project are defined terms of the scope, user requirements, deliverables and costs.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Including but not limited to:
  • Raster software, Vector software, analytical software and RDBMS software.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Project parameters are defined in terms of the scope, user requirements, deliverables and costs.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Learners must supply reasons for parameter selection. Parameters include but are not limited to:
  • Data Sets.
  • Datum.
  • Projection.
  • Spatial extents.
  • Data scale requirements.
  • Attribute measurement scale requirements.
  • Metadata.

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Define models needed to fulfill the GIS project requirements successfully.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A cartographic model for the project is defined and assessed critically by the assessor in terms of standard cartographic principles used for a GIS project.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Including but not limited to:
  • Output mediums.
  • Cartographic production flow.
  • Map design and cartographic furniture.
  • Templates.
  • Metadata presentation.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Spatial data models for the project are define in the context of the GIS project selected.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Including but not limited to:
  • Spatial data requirements.
  • Preferred spatial data models (Raster, Vector), Hybrit, Spaghetti, topological.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Attribute Data models for the project are defined and presented that wil meet the requirements of the GIS project.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Including:
  • ER Model.
  • Entity Attributes.
  • Detailed design.

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Execute the project analysis successfully in order to meet the requirements and objectives of the GIS project selected.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The required project analysis is specified and approved within the context of the GIS project selected.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The input data sets are cleaned as well as integrated and prepared for analysis within the context of the GIS project selected.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The models are executed and the output data sets are generated within the context of the GIS project selected.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The output data sets are assessed and validated within the context of the GIS project selected.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The results are assessed and conclusions are drawn within the context of the GIS project selected.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Complete the GIS project selected in terms of the following criteria: outputs, procedures, metadata and analyse the results.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
