PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is useful for people who aim to achieve career advancement in the GIS field and provides them with essential knowledge in relation life-cycle management of spatio-temporal data.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Understand the life cycle of spatio-temporal data sets.
  • Establish operating procedures to manage change in spatio-temporal data sets.
  • Develop queries dealing with dynamic systems.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Spatial awareness unit standards.
  • Capture Geo-information from secondary data sources.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Range statements are included with specific outcomes as necessary.

Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Understand the life cycle of spatio-temporal data sets used in a GI system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A user requirement for monitoring change is understood and explained in the context of the life cycle of spatio-temporal data sets used in a GI system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The nature of the change traffic in a dataset is understood and explained in the context of the life cycle of spatio-temporal data sets used in a GI system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The problems of near real-time vs. off-line change data management is understood and explained in the context of the life cycle of spatio-temporal data sets used in a GI system.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Establish operating procedures to manage change in spatio-temporal data sets used in a GI system environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The initial baseline condition of the database is established to manage change in spatio-temporal data sets used in a GI system environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The change component of the database is established to manage change in spatio-temporal data sets used in a GI system environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Provision is made to reconcile change information within the database to manage change in spatio-temporal data sets used in a GI system environment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Develop queries dealing with dynamic systems represented within a GI system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The basis for queries dealing with the current condition is established within a GI system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The basis for queries dealing with the historical condition is established within a GI system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The basis for queries dealing with the change over time is established within a GI system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The basis for queries dealing with the future scenarios is established within a GI system.

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
    Notes to Assessors:
  • This unit standard is particularly useful for datasets where historical data remains pertinent, and current realities may include several different value sets. For example: Cadastral data sets will have current values for fields such as zoning, building restrictions, etc. However, some areas may be earmarked for development according to local development objectives. Land managers need to know current and future values for some fields.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
