PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the GISC occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement within social and economic transformation by gaining GIS skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this Unit Standard is able to interpret and apply legislation applicable to GISc practices.

A qualifying learner credited with this Unit Standard will be able to:
  • Interpret and apply relevant legislation that affects a GISc assignment.
  • Describe and explain the purpose and relevance of such legislation to GISc projects.
  • Interpret, describe and explain the consequences of non-compliance with relevant legislation applicable to GISc projects. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    NQF Level 6 communication, as well as an ability to compare the South African GISc legislative environment to legislation in other countries, to implement a GI System in a small business or municipality, and to provide advice regarding: Data gathering, data processing, data modeling, visualization, data output, GI System architecture, GI database management, security, storage, and archiving procedures; an ability to interpret the Professional and Technical Surveyors` Act, No. 40 of 1984, and the rules framed thereunder, to investigate and interpret the SDI Act, No 54 of 2003 and the regulations framed thereunder, and to interpret and apply the Promotion to Access to Information Act, No. 2 of 2000 and the applicable sections of the Copy Right, No. 98 of 1978 will facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The learner is required to apply the assessment criteria to sufficient case studies or projects in order that the suitable application of all legislation listed in the range statement under assessment criteria "The relevant sections of current legislation pertaining to the identified characteristics of a GISc project under investigation are identified" is assessed.

    Steps necessary for the application of relevant legislation in the case of the GISc project under investigation are investigated, described and taken.

    Describe and explain the purpose and relevance of such legislation to any specific GISc project.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with the FE/HE registrar.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Anyone wishing to become an assessor or provider of learning must provide an affordable assessment service.
