PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction, Renewable Energy Sector, chemical and mining industries.

The person credited with this unit standard will understand and be capable of:
  • Planning, installing and joining (also includes installing couplers, sockets) and terminating on gland plates. Installing Low Voltage electrical cables and conductors according to statutory requirements to distribute and control electricity to electrical apparatus.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering, construction, chemical and mining environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Application and construction of wire ways.
  • Use and handling of basic hand tools.
  • Use and handling of portable power tools.
  • Use and knowledge of electrical testing instruments.
  • Introduction to industry.
  • Terminology associated with the tools and materials. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Types of cables may include, but are not limited to:
  • Armoured and un-armoured cables.
  • Screened and unscreened cables.
  • Single and multi-core.

    Conductor types may include, but are not limited to:
  • Insulated and un-insulated types.
  • Solid or multi-stranded.

    Conductors/cable types is limited to Low Voltage up to and including 1000 V AC and 1500 V DC.

    Cable joining and termination include, but are not limited to making off, joining, sockets or couplers (male ad female), fitting of glands, to cables and gland plates.

    Conductor terminations include numbering, fitting and terminations of lugs.

    Cable equipment and special tools may include, but are not limited to:
  • Come-along; Pulley; Sock; Draw wire.
  • Cable cutter; Auger; Bandit Strap Machine.

    Materials may include but are not limited to glands, shrouds, lugs, ferrules, couplers, sockets (male and female), insulation, various metals and jointing kits, tension clamp; piercing connectors.

    Tests on low voltage cables are limited to continuity and insulation resistance.
  • Statutory requirements include all relevant Acts, regulations, codes of practice, industry and company specifications.

    Worksite procedures include but are not limited to written or verbal procedure, formal and informal methods.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Cable and conductor equipment needed for installing, joining and terminating is checked for functionality, safety and availability for use on site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Applicable safety equipment is selected and used according to statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Job instructions are obtained and correctly interpreted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Applicable tools and electrical test instruments are selected according to job- and applicable statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Worksite is inspected for hazards and corrective action is taken according to relevant Health and Safety Acts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to install, join and terminate Low Voltage cables and conductors.

    Point of installation, joining and termination is identified in accordance with work instructions.

    Trenches, ducting and kick pipes are prepared and inspected according to work site requirements and applicable standards.

    Pulling devices are positioned in ducting and kick pipes in accordance with job requirements.

    Obstacles are identified and necessary precautions are taken in accordance with local authority and way-leaves.

    Electrical cables and conductors are marked and numbered according to work site procedures and standard requirements.

    Tools and equipment are used safely to meet the requirements of the job.

    Personal protective equipment is used and site specific procedures are adhered to throughout the installing process.

    Continuity, insulation-and mechanical tests are carried out on completed joint according to statutory requirements.

    Electrical cables and conductors are made-off and terminated according to work site procedures and standards or job requirements.

    All termination connections are secured and tightened according to manufacturer's specifications and work site standards.
