PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for persons who are expected to repair and maintain electronic equipment. The learner will be equipped with knowledge and skills to analyse reports in order make informed decisions to repair, adjust or replace electronic components. Learners will be able to interact and communicate with key role-players in connection of the test results for decision-making purposes. Learners acquiring this unit standard will be able to read circuit diagrams, build circuits and apply soldering skills on different circuit boards.

Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge of specifications of various electronic systems.
  • Interpreting fault -finding report for decision-making.
  • Interpreting electronic circuits diagram.
  • Repairing an electronic system in accordance with manufacture's specifications standard.
  • Testing the repaired equipment for functionality.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the various electronic systems in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Various electronics systems for repair are identified and described in accordance with their circuit diagrams. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Various electronic systems include but are not limited to DVD, television, VCR, car radios, amplifiers and HI-Fis.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Prescribed specifications of electronic systems are explained in terms of their significance for measurements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Prescribed specifications include but are not limited to voltages, current, transmitting power, RX signal path, TX signal path, tone squelch frequency, tone squelch deviation, modulation deviation and audio frequency.

    Interpret fault-finding report for decision-making.

    The values of voltages measured are identified and described in terms of the specification of the electronic system.

    The values of current measured are identified and described in terms of the specification of the electronic system.

    Interpret electronic circuit diagram.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Circuit diagram symbols are interpreted in order to determine correct component values. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Correct voltage supply and current flow are determined in order to establish the required amount of power supply in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    Repair components in accordance with manufacture's specifications standard.

    The purpose and functions of various components are identified and explained in terms of their functions.

    Role-players involved in decision-making in respect of repairs are identified and described in terms of their roles and responsibilities.

    Knowledge of circuit layout and features of the system is demonstrated by means of a circuit diagram.

    Test the repaired equipment for functionality.

    Testing instruments are identified and described in terms of functions and limitations.

    Values of the components are examined in order to determine compliance with the manufacturer's standards.

    A report is collated for record-keeping and inspection purposes.

    Test results are compared in accordance with expectations and actual prescribed manufacturer's specifications for quality control purposes.
