PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will understand and be able to:

Isolate, maintain, repair and do fault finding on a range of AC machines and control gear.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Applicable statutory requirements.
  • Use of basic hand tools and portable power tools.
  • Use of relevant testing and measuring equipment.
  • Maintain and repair AC machines and control gear.
  • Install and commission AC machines and control gear.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Isolating procedures according to SANS 10142.

    AC Machines include, but are not limited to:
  • Induction motors, slip-ring motors and alternators.

    All work to be carried out under supervision.

    Testing and measuring equipment include but are not limited to:
  • Multimeters, Insulation tester, Clip-on ammeter.

    Requirements:
  • Statutory requirements, Manufacturers specifications and Worksite procedures.

    Control gear may include but is not limited to:
  • Direct on line, star delta, soft starter/drivers/inverters, sequence/resistance starters, forward & reverse, rotary switch, auto transformer and dual speed.

    Prepare to maintain and repair AC machines and control gear.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Job instructions and applicable electrical drawings are obtained, evaluated and the sequence of operation is determined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate tools and personal protective equipment are identified, selected and evaluated according to safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety and work site procedures are obtained according to job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Permission is obtained to carry out task according to instructions and drawings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    AC machines and associated control gear are identified and isolated according to maintenance procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Work site is analyzed for safety hazards and corrective actions taken according to statutory requirements and Site Procedures.

    Personal protective equipment is used and site safety procedures are adhered to throughout maintenance.

    Appropriate tools and test equipment are selected, analyzed and used correctly as per manufacturers specifications and work site procedures.

    Task instructions, and work site procedures are followed correctly.

    Testing and measuring is carried out and results evaluated according to maintenance procedures.

    A.C. machines and control gear are maintained according to manufacturer`s specifications and maintenance procedures.

    The correct site approved cleaning materials and solvents are utilised during maintenance.

    Relevant information is gathered by making use of logical methods according to the correct fault finding techniques and safety procedures.

    Reasons for following the correct safe work procedures are understood and the consequences of non-conformance are accurately explained.

    Faults are safely repaired according to work site procedures and gathered information.
