PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the electrical medium voltage reticulation industry.

The person credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Doing maintenance on energised Medium Voltage apparatus in accordance with industry requirements, work procedures, standards and statuary requirements.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard is essential for social and economic transformation and up-liftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Safety procedures (electrical).
  • Induction to industries.
  • Electrical drawings.
  • Applicable electrical test instruments.
  • Basic safety procedures related to tools, electricity and cleaning solvents.
  • Names and functions of Medium Voltage equipment and their components.
  • ORHVS module 1 and 10.
  • First aid level two.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The range of this unit standard includes, but is not limited to insulated gloving and tapping method energised Medium Voltage substations/lines:
  • Maintenance of:
    > Dropout fuse base unit, isolating links and air-break switches.
    > Insulators (pin and straining).
    > Poles and cross-arms.
    > Line hardware.
    > Jumpers.
    > Repair of Jumper and fraying conductors.
    > Repair and replacement of earth conductors.
    > Crimping of conductors.
    > Installation of stays and stay insulators.
    > Tree trimming.
    > Service connections.
    > Removal and replacement of re-closer and sectionalisers.
    > Pole top inspection.
    > Rectification of basic insulation levels.
  • Safety equipment include but are not limited to approved line covers/blankets, work at height protective equipment (incl. full body harness, safety-and work positioning lanyards, rescue equipment and rope grab systems), safety glasses, rubber gloves/sleeves, ladders, platforms, insulating sticks. overhauls, hard hats and safety shoes.
  • Lifting equipment may include, but are not limited to aerial devices, pedestal mounted ladders, nylon strap hoists, rope blocks and lifting tackle.
  • Test equipment for work on energised circuits may include, but are not limited to multi-meters, ammeters, insulation resistance testers, infra red detectors and voltage detectors.
  • Test equipment for routine tests is limited to stick testers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Job instructions are obtained and the section of electrical network to be inspected/maintained/repaired is identified according to geographical/electrical network diagrams. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Task instructions are interpreted and a sequence of operation is planned. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Handout of the affected section of the network is arranged according to job instructions/maintenance schedules or breakdown reports where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Applicable hand tools and safety equipment is inspected for availability and functionality prior to use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Insulated/insulating equipment for work on energised circuits is inspected, cleaned and transported in accordance with energised work standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Appropriate lifting equipment/machines are identified, selected, inspected, cleaned and transported according to statutory requirements and relevant standards/procedures.

    Carry out work on energised Medium Voltage networks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Handout of the affected section of the network is received according to job instructions/maintenance schedules or breakdown reports where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hazardous conditions are identified, calculated and the risk mitigation is discussed with the work team according to risk analyses procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Work area/structure configuration is assessed to identify the specific tools and equipment required for the effective and safe execution of the task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Maintenance/repairs on Medium Voltage networks are carried out in accordance with the relevant live work standards/work procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety precautions/procedures are followed before, during and after inspection and testing installation.

    Complete the work task.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The affected section of the network is handed back to the Control Officer according to operating regulations for high voltage systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools, insulated/insulating equipment is inspected, cleaned and stored in accordance with relevant standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate lifting equipment/machines are inspected, cleaned and stored according to statutory requirements and relevant standards/procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documentation is completed and submitted according to data management procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Carry out routine inspections, maintenance and testing of insulated/insulating and lifting equipment used for work on energised Medium Voltage networks.

    Carry out routine testing and record results as per statutory requirements.

    Ensure that the relevant insulated/insulating tools and lifting equipment's certificates are valid and in place as per statutory requirements/data management systems.
