PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who are required to value polished diamond gemstones.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to measure proportions of polished diamond gemstones and describe their application.
  • Measure dimensions of polished diamond gemstones.
  • Calculate proportions of polished diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct post-measuring reconciliation, checking and security activities.

    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the equipment and tools used to measure proportions of diamond gemstones and describe their application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment and their components used to measure proportions of diamond gemstones are identified and their use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The equipment used for measuring proportions of diamond gemstones must include:
  • Proportion Scope.
  • Micrometer.
  • Leverage gauge.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The measurements that are critical in determining proportion are explained in terms of requirements for calculating proportions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of proportion in determining the value of polished diamonds is explained in relation to the effects of light on the brilliance of a diamond. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The effects of light on brilliance must include:
  • Shallow or thin crown.
  • Deep pavilion.
  • Large culet.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of accuracy in both measuring and recording is explained in relation to the sensitivity measurements have on calculating proportions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Practices are explained to maintain housekeeping, security of diamond gemstones, safety in the workplace and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and profitability. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Measure dimensions of polished diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate equipment is selected in order to measure the selected polished diamond gemstones in accordance with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Each required dimension of the selected diamond gemstones is physically measured using appropriate equipment and is recorded in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The selected diamond gemstones are then measured using a proportion scope or computer and the measurements recorded in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Girdles are assessed and their thickness recorded in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Calculate proportions of polished diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The proportions that polished diamonds are measured against are explained and the formula for each proportion is identified from a list of formulae. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Proportions that are to be measured must include:
  • Depth percentage.
  • Table percentage.
  • Crown height percentage.
  • Pavilion depth percentage.
  • Girdle percentage.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The proportions of the selected diamonds are calculated using the measurements previously obtained and recorded in line with workplace specific practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The results of the proportion calculations are compared to the results from the measurement by proportion scope or computer and the differences explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Proportion faults are explained in terms of symmetry considerations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Proportion faults must include:
  • Girdle not round.
  • Girdle thickness.
  • Corners not equal.
  • Sides not parallel.
  • Wings and lobes not equal.
  • Pavilion depth.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The measurements of the selected polished diamonds are used to estimate weight of each gemstone and these are compared to the weight reflected in the parcel. Differences are explained in terms of the accuracy of measuring systems. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct post-measuring reconciliation, checking and security activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Measured diamond gemstones are returned to the appropriate storage facility/receptacle and information relating to the features examined is recorded in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Measured diamond gemstones are reconciled and accounted for in accordance with workplace specific instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after examination. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean hands, equipment and accessories.
  • Replace equipment and accessories into correct storage facilities.
  • Calibration of equipment, where necessary, is maintained according to the specifications of the equipment.
  • Diamonds and parcels are secured in the appropriate facilities.
  • Diamond gemstones are accounted for after examination in terms of the workplace security system.
