PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this standard will develop a deeper understanding of HIV/AIDS as a disease. In addition, they would acquire knowledge of how it affects employees in the workplace and impacts on their rights and responsibilities. The importance of industry and company policies pertaining to HIV/AIDS is also discussed.

    Explain the main concepts and aspects of HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ways of contracting and/or transmitting the disease are described in order to remove misconceptions about the disease and about people living with HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The symptoms of HIV/AIDS are described with reference to the stages of the disease. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The concept of a window period is discussed in terms of the difference between HIV and Aids. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Behaviours that promote HIV/AIDS are discussed with the aim of demonstrating ways through which the spread of the disease can be curbed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Support systems for dealing with HIV/AIDS are discussed in terms of their availability and benefits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The basic applicable treatments are discussed so that awareness is created that HIV/AIDS is not seen as a death sentence.

    The Constitutional rights of employees are discussed to emphasise the importance of safeguarding these rights.

    Legislation specific to the treatment of employees with HIV/AIDS in the workplace is discussed.

    The way in which legislation is applied in the workplace is discussed to check company/organisation compliance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Company/organisation HIV/AIDS policy is discussed in terms of whether it is in line with legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The consequences of not adhering to legislation are discussed to emphasise the importance of workers rights. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of the employer in improving the life of workers with HIV/AIDS is discussed to emphasise employer responsibility. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
