PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable persons responding to and supervising fire fighting team operations to control and mitigate fire incidents. Learners will be equipped with tactical competencies required to deal with fire fighting activities. This unit standard is applicable to teams that are expected to respond to and arrive at the scene of an incident in order to perform firefighting functions at a supervisory level.

Person credited with this unit will be able to:

  • Devise a fire fighting and rescue plan.
  • Implement and monitor a rescue plan.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assess a fire and rescue incident. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A fire scene is evaluated in terms of evacuation considerations for public and livestock. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Potential risks relating to an incident are identified and assessed to determine their likelihood of occurrence and their threat to life, environment and property. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Offensive and defensive risk reduction strategies are formulated according to the potential for incident escalation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Strategies are determined to preserve life, the environment and property in accordance with the potential risks relating to the incident. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Resources needed are identified, quantified and prioritised in order to maximise rescue potential within the incident. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The roles and responsibilities of the various team members are understood so as to be able to allocate emergency tasks and duties to them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Responsibilities are allocated to fire fighting teams in accordance with the roles and activities of individual fire fighters. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Devise a fire fighting and rescue plan.

    Information is collected at the scene without causing any disruption or negative consequences to safety of personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information collected from the scene is analysed and categorised in terms of different rescue plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Various rescue plans are formulated within acceptable timeframes for a given situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The best option is selected to suit the specific situation and choice is justified in terms of effectiveness, minimisation of risk and safety of people and property. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The plan is communicated to team members in such a way as to coordinate a team effort. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Implement and monitor a rescue plan.
