PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People working on a motorcycle are required to be able to remove and replace a motorcycle wheel and ensure that all components operate correctly. This is a critical skill for motorcycle mechanics and includes all aspects of the wheels and various components related to the wheels. This unit standard will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in automotive repair and maintenance at NQF Level 2 and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression and is one of a series of unit standards for maintaining vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, workshop equipment, measuring equipment, vehicle lifting equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The definition of motorcycle is extended to include 2- and 4-wheelers that are used either on or off the road.
  • This unit standard includes both alloy and spoke wheels of a motorcycle, either front or rear. Although not all people will be required to work on all types of motorcycle wheels, it is required that each person will have the relevant knowledge and ability to work on any of the wheels identified.
  • All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    Demonstrate knowledge of tyre theory.

    Information supplied on a tyre is interpreted in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Information includes size, speed rating, inflation and profile.

    Tyres are classified according to their application.

    Application includes road, track, sand or mud.

    Benefits of specific tyre tread patterns are explained over other tread patterns for a specific application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of adequate tread on a tyre is explained in terms of grip and handling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tyre wear is analysed and the causes of uneven tyre wear are selected from a range of common causes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Run-out on a tyre is identified and explained in relation to the causes and effects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The importance of fitting a tyre correctly is explained in terms of vehicle handling and safety.

    Fitting includes direction of rotation and placement on the rim.

    Conditions under which puncture prevention substances should or should not be used are explained according to tyre and substance manufacturer specifications.

    Remove and fit wheel bearings.

    Wheel bearings are removed and fitted according to manufacturers specifications.

    Bearings are cleaned and lubricated in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Bearings are inspected and replaced if necessary. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Inspection includes play, smoothness of rotation, noise and wear.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All work is conducted safely and in accordance with all prescribed workplace procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Fit a tyre and tube. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Fitting the tyre includes tubeless tyres.

    The tyre is fitted in the correct direction of rotation as specified by the manufacturer.

    Tubes are fitted according workplace procedures.

    Valves are fitted according to manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Work is completed in accordance with agreed time schedules.

    All work is conducted with due safety and in accordance with all prescribed workplace procedures.

    Damaged spokes are identified and reported on in terms of the extent of damage and possible causes.

    Damage includes straightness, looseness, strength and overall condition.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Spokes are replaced according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Damaged rims are identified and reported on in terms of the extent of damage and possible causes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Damage includes twist, dents, chips and overall condition.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The wheel is ensured to run concentrically around the axle and within acceptable side to side motion. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Balance and align a wheel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Imbalance on the wheel is identified using the wheel balancing machine according to operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Weights are positioned to counteract identified imbalances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Positioning and size of weights are in accordance with organisation requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Types of weights used are appropriate to the wheel being balanced.

    Type of weight includes flat stick-on weights and conical weights.

    The wheel is adjusted for correct tracking in relation to other wheels and the suspension system.

    Chain tension is checked and adjusted in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria.
