PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the South African Navy who work/wish to work as an officer on the bridge of a ship. This Unit Standard meets the needs of this sector and of the society by providing competent naval officers who by competently being able to handle the ships safety during operational conditions. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to direct counter-measures against any perceived above- and below-water threat.

The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will contribute the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of bridge weapons safety drills.
  • Execute bridge weapon firing drills.
  • Execute bridge procedures for submarine safety under exercise conditions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Direct the vessel's conduct with regard to torpedo and missile countermeasures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Alarms and action drills for an incoming torpedo and missile are executed as per standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Vessel control is handed over to the operations room according to requirements for the changed combat state. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The vessel is manoeuvred to the provide the smallest profile with regards to radar cross-section and torpedo counter-measures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The vessel is manoeuvred according to operations room command until missile torpedo and countermeasures are complete. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Control is reassumed by the bridge at all clear. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of bridge weapons safety drills.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of weapon characteristics, ammunition and weapon parts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given of weapon firing cycles and drills for the solution of firing problems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given of weapons, personnel and the environment safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Weapon safety include: safety arcs (range clear or foul); equipment safety; blind safety and visual safety (verifying target).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A description is given of corrective drills for firing scenarios. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Firing scenarios include single shot and automatic.
  • Corrective drills include misfire and stoppage drills.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A description is given of procedures for establishing a navigational warning.

    A description is given of the instructions for positioning the ship to bring weapons to bearand for the loading of weapons.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Weapons and ammunition are selected which are appropriate to designated target. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Navigational warning is established as per operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Orders to carry out weapon loading, standby to fire, and permission to engage are given in line with standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The vessel is manoeuvred into a position in order to bring arms to bear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Allowance is made for the controllable and uncontrollable elements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Controllable elements include automatic/manual weapon weapon type and function.
  • Uncontrollable elements include environment, motion, sight, milieu, movement of the enemy and swell.

    Alarm procedures are responded to as per standard operating procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Signals are identified and interpreted according to standard operating procedures for submarine safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Signals:
  • Sound, underwater telephone, pyrotechnic signals and submarine distress signals (oil, debris, flares, buoy).
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The vessels conduct through the submarine exercise area is ensured to comply with standard operating procedures and standing orders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ship's conduct is ensured to comply with he submarine exercise order with respect to sonar activity, speed and presence in the area. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Submarine exercise orders include:
  • Transmission of sonar; streaming of variable depth sonars; required speed; designated safety courses, exit for submarine surface.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Procedures to deal with own vessel failure in the submarine exercise area are executed in a manner that promotes safety of own vessel and personnel and that of the submarine.
