PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable the learner to apply basic aural and musical listening techniques to transcribe musical pieces. The skills, knowledge and attitudes embedded within this unit standard are essential for developing competencies to practice in the field of music.

Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying and constructing intervals.
  • Identifying and interpreting chords.
  • Identifying and practising common diatonic chord progressions.
  • Demonstrating melodic dictation and singing in any standard notation.
  • Demonstrating rhythmic dictation and clapping of rhythms.
  • Formulating basic lead sheet transcription for two music pieces.

    Identify and construct intervals.

    Major and minor common intervals are identified and sung in any notation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common intervals include:
  • But is not limited to intervals of 1st-8th.

    Intervals are inverted and recognised according to music. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Interval relationship is compared in the sections of musical pieces.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The difference between chords and their respective inversions are recognised as specified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Chords at this level include major7, minor7, dominant7.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chords are sung in all their inversions as specified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Chord tone construction is demonstrated by notation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and practise common diatonic chord progressions.

    Common chord progressions are identified in a specified composition.

    Roman numerals are formulated as specified.

    Chord progressions are recognised when played in any inversion.

    Eight to twelve bar melodies are composed using Roman numeral analyses.

    Melodies are sung and accompanied by learners on their chosen instrument.

    Un-tuned percussion learners should perform these exercises on keyboard.

    An eight bar melody is dictated after it is heard 3 times. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    A melody is dictated using a metronome.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An eight bar rhythm is dictated after it is played three times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A rhythmic phrase is dictated using a metronome. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Minimum tempo: 65 bpm.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Formulate basic lead sheet transcription for two pieces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A song is listened to and sections labelled. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The quantity of bars is allocated to each song section. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The form of the song is written down in the shortest, most musical bar format. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Repeat sign, 1st time, 2nd time bars, D.C, D.S, D.S al Coda is applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A whole song is transcribed by using the appropriate melodies and rhythms.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of Level 5 competency in the field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
